ASL-Interpreted Play - Curse of the Starving Class

Theatre Raleigh is excited to be offering an ASL interpreted performance on November 17th of their currently running production of Curse of the Starving Class.

Summary:
The setting is a farmhouse in the American West, inhabited by a family who has enough to eat but not enough to satisfy the other hunger that bedevils them. The father is a drunk; the mother a frowzy slattern; the daughter precocious beyond her years; and the son a deranged idealist. As the family decides to sell the house to raise money, the mother talks of running off to Europe or Mexico; the father sobers up and tries to take control; the daughter is blown up in the family car; and the son is left brutalized and bloodied. In the end the characters become a metaphor for the underside of American life—benighted innocents pursuing a dream that remains beyond their reach. Winner of the 1977 Obie Award for Best New American Play.

ASL Shadow-Interpreted Play - Anne of Green Gables at Studio 1

Do you love theater? Then you don’t want to miss this upcoming play, incorporating ASL interpretation! There will be shows Nov 10-12 and Nov 17-19.

Studio One, a community theater organization in Burlington, is hosting an upcoming play with shadow interpreting. Typically, ASL interpreters stay in one fixed location on stage, but this is different: each actor has their own interpreter moving with them on stage, so the interpretation is fully included in the show.

Their upcoming production is Anne of Green Gables. Here is a summary: Stern Marilla and her warm-hearted brother Matthew hoped to adopt a boy to work on their farm. But the orphanage sends young, befreckled Anne by mistake, and their lives will never be the same. Her warmth and wit affect everyone around her – even, eventually, the cold Marilla.
