RiverRun International Film Festival - Marlee Matlin: Not Alone Anymore

MARLEE MATLIN: NOT ALONE ANYMORE

In 1987, Marlee Matlin became the first Deaf actor to win an Academy Award and was thrust into the spotlight at 21 years old. Reflecting on her life in her primary language of American Sign Language, Marlee explores the complexities of what it means to be a trailblazer. As a child, filmmaker Shoshannah Stern was inspired to believe that a Deaf woman like herself could pursue a career as an actor after seeing Matlin win her Oscar, making this directorial debut an intimate and honest full-circle moment.

A NEW PERSPECTIVE SHORTS PROGRAM

AFTER THE BOMB

In an era where the violence of war often leaves victims forgotten, a woman whose life was devastated by a bomb in Northern Ireland joins with fellow victims and survivors to fight for restitution and acknowledgment from an unresponsive government. Amidst her fight, she finds new healing in a friendship based on shared need, where one walks and the other sees.

SIGNS FROM THE MAINLAND

Starting as far back as the early 1700s, genetic deafness took a foothold on Martha’s Vineyard. As many as one in four residents were deaf, and a majority of hearing residents were able to communicate in what is considered one of the precursors to modern American Sign Language. Signs from the Mainland explores the deeper meaning and lessons to be learned from this unique enclave where deaf and hearing individuals coexisted seamlessly.

SWIMMING WITH BUTTERFLIES

After missing bronze by 1/100th of a second at the 2016 Paralympic Games, Austin-based swimmer Lizzi Smith shares an intimate story of how changing her self-perception didn’t just bring her back to the pool— it’s bringing hope to the next generation.
