The Human Race - 2020
Video in ASL, message equivalent to English below
The Human Race is an opportunity for local nonprofits to raise money for their community-based programs. CSDHH has participated for 6 years now, and funds raised via the Human Race support the Evans-Melton Access Fund, which supports communication access services in areas not-covered by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Some examples include funerals and public entertainment events, like the NC Folk Festival!
The 5K Walk/Run is now a virtual event! There’s more detail/information below, but plan to do your run/walk between June 13 and June 19, 2020. Then, tune in on Saturday morning, June 20, at 9:30am for the live program with entertainment, results, and awards!
How can you help? Our goal is to raise $2,000 to provide communication access in the community, and we’d love to see your support of Access for All! Show your support by donating and by joining the team as a walker or runner. More information on donating and walking/running can be found below.
How do I donate?
See the slideshow above for information on how to Donate to the CSDHH team page.
All you need to do is go to our Team Page, click ‘Donate,’ and follow the prompts to submit a donation! Be sure to Enhance your Donation and pay the processing fees, so that your donation does the most good!
Thank you so much for supporting communication access for the community.
What does the money support?
We have participated in this annual event for the past five years to raise awareness about communication access barriers experienced by Deaf and Hard of Hearing residents! Your dollars will go towards a fund to provide American Sign Language Interpreting services, real-time captioning, and other communication support services where the Americans with Disabilities Act 1990 protection does not apply. Settings include funerals, free community-wide events, and more. To date, we’ve raised almost $4,000.00 towards this fund, we’d love to bring that total to $6,000 this year! Please join us in our goal towards inclusion for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Triad residents.
This fund was named in recognition of Elice Evans and Shannon Melton for their service to CSDHH.
What is a Virtual Race?

We’re still fundraising and building excitement towards this event, even though it’s now virtual! What does a virtual race look like?
Instead of getting together in one place to all run at the same time, everyone will run on their own any time between June 13 and June 19.
You will use the It’s Your Race app (called ‘IYR Virtual’) to track your run, which will automatically save your race time and upload it to the race coordinators
Then, on Saturday, June 20, tune in live at 9:30am to the Human Race livestream video! There will be entertainment, messages from the non-profit organizations and teams, race results, and awards!
How do you use the app and log your virtual 5K race?
Download the It’s Your Race/IYR Virtual app
Log-in using the same email address you used when registering for the race
Search the name of the race - ‘The Human Race - Now Virtual’
Make sure it says Greensboro, NC and has the date 6/13/2020
Click ‘Tracker’, then ‘Ready for Race’
Until June 13, it will say ‘no races available,’ you can’t log your race until June 13
Make sure to allow the permissions the app asks for, such as location services, GPS, notifications, etc. Without these, the app will not be able to upload your results
That’s it! On whatever day you choose between June 13 and 19, you can log your race. The app will automatically upload the results, and then you can get ready to watch the livestream program on Saturday morning, June 20!
I want to walk/run. How do I join the team?
Video in ASL, equivalent to English message below
We would love for you to join our team! You can choose from a 1-mile Fun-Run or walk, or sign up to run the 5K! If you want to participate in the timed competitive 5K event, there is a paid registration. Now that the race is virtual, the cost is only $20! We hope that you might then consider adding a few more dollars as a donation to the CSDHH team page when signing up. If you want to walk or run the 1-mile fun run, you can still register on our team at no cost!
You can register by going to our Team Page, and clicking the green ‘Register Now’ button. Follow the prompts to sign up, but note:
When you’re filling out the information for the section ‘Event Questions,’ make sure to select ‘Join an Existing Team,’ then select our team (‘Communication Services for the Deaf’)
Spread the word! Now that you’re signed up to run, you can help us reach our goal and support communication access in the community by encouraging other people to donate to our team!
I want to train/socialize with a community. How else can I be involved?

We want to really build excitement and have fun getting ready for The Human Race on June 20. So, we’re hosting a Weekly Virtual Run/Walk that we’d love you to join!
Once a week, host a quick Instagram Live Video to get everyone together. Then, everyone will run or walk on their own at the same time. When you finish your walk/run, post a screenshot showing your time and distance to our Facebook page and on Instagram with the hashtag #csdhhTHR. Then, after the walk/run, we’ll host an ASL Zoom meeting that everyone can join to chat and hang out after the run/walk.
For those of you looking to work up to the full 5k distance (3.1 miles), don’t be scared! This is a great race distance that anyone can work towards. We’ve got a sample schedule where you can start at 1 mile and then increase each week, getting to the full 3.1 miles by the Human Race.
Check out more information on how to participate, a sample training schedule, and apps to use at our Weekly Virtual Run/Walk page.
